Covid-19 and Sexual Health Clinic Update:

SH:24 Online Testing

SH:24 self-testing kits which can be ordered online, are now available in Stoke-on-Trent, as well as North Staffordshire. The kits can test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV, and tests are recommended for the service user based on a questionnaire they fill in.

Usually, testing is only available to asymptomatic patients, however, due to COVID-19 clinic changes, testing is now available to most symptomatic patients, with some exceptions for those with acute symptoms.

Testing is only available to people over 16. Under 16s should call the sexual health team on 0300 7900 165 for advice.

Sexual Health Clinics

Sexual health clinics in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire are temporarily closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A telephone-only service is currently being offered until guidance changes.

Some key points about clinics during this time include:

  • Free condoms are available to pick up from the entrance of Cobridge Community Health Centre for those who wish to access them (Doors open 8.30am-4pm Monday to Thursday & 8.30am-2pm on Friday)
  • Telephone consultations can be offered for contraception and STI enquiries
  • POP may be prescribed as a contraceptive for those who meet the criteria
  • LARC use (Implants/IUCs) may be extended, following FRSH guidance
  • In urgent cases (people with acute symptoms), service users may be seen in clinic, but will need to make contact via telephone in the first instance

C-Card

The C-Card programme offers free condoms in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire and is run by the Sexual Health Prevention Team. We are not currently accepting new sign-ups to the C-Card scheme during COVID-19 service limitations.

If your pharmacy is signed up as a registration or distribution point, and you require more C-Cards or C-Card condom packs, please email SexualHealthOrders@mpft.nhs.uk and we will send some. Orders may take longer than usual due to limited numbers of staff in offices.

If you are not signed up to the C-Card scheme, but require free condom packs to give out at your pharmacy, please get in touch with us at SexualHealthOrders@mpft.nhs.uk and we will arrange for some condoms to be sent.

 

LGBT+ Services

Local LGBT+ groups (Gaylife Men’s Group and Galaxy Youth Group), which are run by the Sexual Health Prevention Team, remain closed.

However, the lgbtstoke.co.uk website remains a good resource to signpost LGBT+ people to, and has been re-designed with updated information.

The Integrated Sexual Health Service provides a range of sexual health services for people living in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

Services provided in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire include:

Sexual Health Clinics

Sexual health clinics are available in Cobridge, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Blurton, Meir, Bentilee and Shelton. At these clinics, people can access contraception, STI testing, EHC and information and advice on sexual health (services vary by clinic). Some clinics are only available to people under 25.

The main clinic in Stoke-on-Trent is Cobridge Community Health Centre and PEP* can also be accessed from this clinic. Visit openclinic.org.uk/clinics/ for opening times and locations.

*PEP will only be given in certain circumstances; individuals will be assessed by a clinician to determine suitability.

 

Contraception

Free contraception is available at CASH clinics in Cobridge, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Blurton, Bentilee, Shelton and Meir. Contraception options that the sexual health service offer are:

 

For contraceptive procedures (for the implant/coil), service users will need a consultation first. An appointment will then be booked for the procedure.

GUM services

Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) is a confidential service which deals with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV.

A full range of tests for STIs, treatment and care are all available free of charge to anyone who feels they need these services.

If someone has symptoms, they must attend the sexual health clinic at Cobridge Community Health Centre, but if no symptoms are present, a full sexual health check-up can be provided at the clinics in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Blurton, Shelton and Meir.

Psychosexual service

The Psychosexual Clinic provides help, support and advice for individuals and couples in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire with sexual problems, including difficulties in getting or keeping an erection, ejaculation problems, arousal problems, painful sex (dyspareunia, vaginismus, vulvodynia), lack or loss of sexual desire, sexual phobia or anxiety and more.

At the clinic, the service user will be seen by a doctor or therapist with a special interest and further training in the management of sexual problems. Depending on the nature of the problem, a medical examination, tests, counselling and/or medical treatments may be offered.

C-Card programme

The C-Card programme is a scheme led by the Sexual Health Prevention Team which people aged 13 and over with quick and easy access to free condoms and lube in a number of venues, including pharmacies, GPs and educational and community venues.

This service is available to people living in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

The C-Card is a plastic card that gives people quick and easy access to free condoms and lube.  Pharmacies can sign up as a registration or distribution venue for the C-Card condom distribution scheme.

Additional services available to people living in Stoke-on-Trent only include:

HIV fingerprick testing drop-ins

Throughout the year, the Sexual Health Prevention Team offer a free HIV testing drop-in service, with results available in 20 minutes.

The drop-in sessions are held from 5-8pm on the last Wednesday and Thursday of every month (excluding December) in Hanley.

HIV Treatment and Care

This service provides HIV care to any NHS patients wishing to attend the service, which includes free and confidential treatment for people living with HIV. People can make contact with the team directly if they are newly diagnosed, although referrals are accepted from healthcare professionals.

 

Sex and Relationships Education

The Sexual Health Prevention Team offer a range of Sex and Relationships Education sessions to people in Stoke-on-Trent, provided by our Sexual Health Prevention Team. Each session covers basic information on healthy relationships, contraception, safer sex and local sexual health services.

School sessions we offer include:

  • Year 9 – Healthy Relationships
  • Year 10 – Contraception
  • Year 11 – Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
  • Sixth Form – Pornography

LGBT social and support groups (Gaylife)

Gaylife is a sexual health and lifestyle support service created especially for the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in Stoke-on-Trent, and for those questioning their sexuality or gender identity.

The service, run by the Sexual Health Prevention Team, hosts two social and support groups, a Gay and Bisexual Men’s Group for ages 18+ and Galaxy Youth Group for LGBT+ young people aged 13-18.

The team also offers LGBT+ awareness training to professionals in Stoke-on-Trent, LGBT+ specific sexual health advice and information/ literature on sexuality and gender identity.

Young Pregnancy Support Service

This team offers support, information and advice to young people who are pregnant or are parents aged 17 years and under living in Stoke-on-Trent.  They can offer support on a wide range of issues including, pregnancy options, terminations, sexual health, benefits, finances, housing education and childcare.
